Why is it better to take Pilates and Yoga from a studio as opposed to a gym or health club?
Robin and Lou Ann have both received extensive training in the classical Joseph Pilates method of body conditioning through Peak Pilates of Boulder, CO. Additionally, Robin is a 200 hour certified Yoga instructor through Yoga Works in NY and is registered with the Yoga Alliance. Many gym or health club instructors have training in a variety of areas but have not been through a rigorous and comprehensive pilates or yoga training program. Also, a gym or health club is generally not as fully equipped with pilates equipment and yoga props and as a result the instructors may not be able to cater to your individual needs.
How do I sign up for classes?
Signing up is easy - call 703-595-1550 and we will be happy to assist you in finding the right class for you. Once you arrive for class, fill out our Heath History form and pay the instructor by cash, check or charge. For your convenience we accept both Mastercard and Visa.
What should I wear?
Dress comfortably allowing for free movement, but not too loose - we closely monitor your posture and alignment for safety and to make sure that you get the most from your session. For privacy, bike shorts or undergarments should be worn if shorts are loose fitting.
I have never taken these classes before. Do I have to take an introductory session to get started?
We strongly recommend that students who are new to Pilates Reformer / Tower classes take either one-on-ones or duets to be introduced to the equipment and to learn the exercises before taking a class. This will also give the instructor an idea of where your strengths and weaknesses lie to provide you with the attention that you need to reach your goals.
What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
Both of these disciplines provide for care of the mind, body and spirit.
Pilates is a system of exercises that emphasize controlled movement with correct form, and will engage the mind as well as the body. It builds strength without excess bulk, creating a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen. It teaches body awareness, good posture and graceful movement. It also improves flexibility, agility and economy of motion. It can dramatically change the way your body looks, feels and performs.
Yoga is a philosophy that teaches the union of body, mind and spirit. The physical postures practiced in a typical yoga class provide a well-rounded mind/body workout using breath and movement to deepen self-awareness, concentration and inner calmness while building tone and strength, increasing flexibility and balance, and improving coordination. Yoga's inward focus gradually leads to a quieter mind, inner calmness and improved physical health.
What is the difference between Pilates Mat and Pilates Reformer / Tower classes?
The equipment uses springs as resistance when you are working through the exercises whereas the mat routines rely on your own body to provide that same resistance. One type of class is not better than the other. Both the mat work and the equipment are important components of the classical pilates method.
Do Pilates and Yoga help me to lose weight?
They both can assist you in achieving your personal goals when combined with proper nutrition and cardiovascular exercise. In both you will tone and stretch your muscles, developing a leaner, sleeker physique.
